You'll see data centers advertise themselves as "Tier 3" or "Tier 4" constantly — but what does that actually guarantee? The Tier system, defined by the Uptime Institute, is a standardized way to classify a facility's redundancy and expected uptime. Here's what each level actually means.
What Are Data Center Tiers?
The Tier classification system rates data centers from Tier 1 (basic) to Tier 4 (fault tolerant) based on redundancy in power, cooling, and network paths — in other words, how well the facility can keep running when something fails or needs maintenance.

Which Tier Do You Actually Need?
